SJBCC HEALTH & WELLNESS COMPONENT (SJI)

According to the 2007-2008 NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey), obesity now affects 17% of all children and adolescents in the United States – triple the rate from just one generation ago. America’s obese children are at an alarmingly heightened risk for elevated blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and becoming obese adults. The financial cost of childhood obesity tips the scales at 3 billion dollars annually.

The Health Wellness component will address the importance of healthy eating in everyday life. The consumption of fruits & vegetables, water and reducing sugar intake will be at the forefront of discussions. There have been numerous studies that report in the United States, a majority of our youth are obese and in active. African Americans face a disproportionate amount of diet-related health problems. For example, African American adults are 1.6 times more likely to have diabetes than their Caucasian counterparts. Individuals in low-income communities may face a greater risk because they typically have less access to healthy foods. Due to the significant diet-related problems within the African American community, public health researchers call for approaches to health promotion that take into account the relationship between culture and dietary habits.

KEY PROGRAM
